Telemedicine is encompassed within the wider scope of telehealth. Telehealth entails preventive, curative, and promotive aspects. It supports remote monitoring of a patient 's vitals, blood sugar level, and electrocardiography, health education services, as well as remote medical consultations (i.e. telemedicine). Through modern telehealth technology, doctors are able to examine, diagnose, recommend treatment, and monitor a patient's medical condition remotely, no matter how far the distance.

Telemedicine improves access to healthcare in underserved communities by removing time and distance barriers, extending the reach of medical education, and optimizing the use of limited health services.
